  4. With the recent COVID-19 pandemic ruling our lives recently, Berwick Historical Society has been hard at work behind the scenes, getting ready for a new exhibit. Just in time for the passing Halloween season, the Berwick Historical Society has just restored and opened an exhibit of the Old Berwick Jailhouse. The Old Carriage House, located at the Jackson Mansion is the site of the new exhibit. Jackson Mansion was built in the 1800’s, and served as a mansion, Town Hall, Berwick Police Department, and yes, our very own Jailhouse. In 1950, the Berwick Police Department took over the Carriage
  5. This month marks the start of Geisinger's new visitation policy that includes, no visitors. Visitors are allowed to see patients and enter facilities under special circumstances only. The company stated, that this is to help keep patients safe, as COVID-19 cases increase in the area and within local hospitals. Geisinger is offering ways to accommodate family members allowing communications with loved ones while in the facilities. Such as, providing families with iPads.   8. We will be having our Halloween parade this year with some modifications. Please use your head with safety protocols. There will no inside activities this year. We will be handing out bags of candy and throwing candy from the apparatus during the parade. Parade forms at 6 and moves at 6:30. Rain date is the 28th. Judging of costumes is a possibility at this point either outside or in the engine bay. Visit their Facebook event for more details.

    A safe, socially distant, and FUN alternative for Halloween 2020! Featuring a drive-thru reverse Halloween parade, a virtual costume party, yummy treats, food trucks, and two drive-in Halloween movies - the first at 6:30pm will be Hocus Pocus (PG, 1hr 36mins) followed by Beetlejuice at 9:00 pm (PG, 1hr 33mins). The suggested donation is $5 per car (though you are welcome to give more!). Proceeds will benefit participating nonprofits in their ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts.     Join us for our annual Trunk-R-Treat event. We will have 15+ candy & toy stops and 3 hand sanitizer stations set up in out parking lot. Our volunteers who are handing out goodies will be wearing face coverings and gloves. Groups will be spaced 8+ feet apart and masks are encouraged for all.   14. On Wednesday, Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education stated that the board unanimously agreed to continue working on plans to combine some higher education schools. The two possible mergers Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield and/or California, Clarion, and Edinboro. A merger between the set of schools would result in them operating under a single accredited entity and a single leadership team.   15. Commonwealth Health has sold off Berwick Hospital to Fayette Holdings, in a move that is expected to change ownership of the hospital by the end of the year. Berwick Hospital was owned by Commonwealth Health, who owns numerous local hospital (e.g. Wilkes Barre General) and stated that the hospital will be completely independent from Commonwealth Health once the new ownership takes place.   17. The Benton Volunteer Fire Company will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser this upcoming Sunday, but it will be slightly different then normal thanks to the current pandemic. In order to help keep people protected, the breakfast will be served on platters (instead of buffet style line) and volunteers will be around to help ensure you can enjoy all the cakes you can eat. Drinks will also be served in individual containers instead of the normal dispensers and seating will be spaced to allow more social distancing. PA Homepage has reported that the State Police are investigating people using items to extract mail from within USPS mail boxes in a attempt to collect gift cards, checks, personal information, and valuables. State police are advising locals to send mail directly via the post office or at least ensure the mail is placed into USPS boxes before the last pickup time listed on the box.
